Es war Montag früh. Matthias war draußen im Garten und er war wirklich verblüfft. Vor fünf Minuten hatte er ein glänzendes neues silbernes Spielzeugauto gerade noch hier in der Hand gehabt. Aber wo war es jetzt?
Er suchte neben dem Zaun, hinter dem Haus und drüben in der Nähe des Goldfischteiches. Er rannte ins Haus und durchsuchte sein Schlafzimmer. Sein Auto war verschwunden!
Matthias fragte Vati und Mutti, ob sie es gesehen hätten. Die beiden schüttelten mit dem Kopf und sagten: „Nein.“ Ihm war nach Weinen zumute, aber er unterdrückte seine Tränen und fand etwas anderes, womit er spielen konnte.
Später am Morgen bemerkte Matthias, dass noch ein anderes Spielzeug fehlte - ein grüner Spielzeuglaster, der ihm wirklich gefiel. Er war sicher, dass er ihn unten neben die Küchentür gelegt hatte. Mensch! Was war los? Nun waren zwei Sachen weg! Er suchte erneut mit demselben Ergebnis. Nichts!
Mutti und Vati halfen ihm. Sie suchten überall - sogar neben der Hecke, im Holzschuppen und im Whirlpool. Sie konnten auch nichts finden. Jetzt waren sie alle verblüfft!
„Na ja“, sagte Mutti „sei den restlichen Tag sehr vorsichtig! Vielleicht werden deine Sachen später wieder auftauchen.“
Das war aber nicht der Fall.
Matthias musste endlich zu Bett gehen - ohne seine Lieblingsspielzeuge!
Am nächsten Tag (das war Dienstag) passierte genau das Gleiche! Zuerst war es ein neuer roter Ball, dann eine bunte kleine Diego-Aktionsfigur und zuletzt ein gelber Stofflöwe. Drei weitere Sachen waren verschwunden. Jetzt hatte Matthias fünf seiner Lieblingssachen verloren.
„Nein, nein, nein!“, rief er aus. „Es ist wirklich nicht fair!“
Mutti und Vati wussten keinen Rat. Sie trösteten Matthias und beschlossen ihn zu beobachten, während er spielte. Sie lösten sich ab. Der Tag verging, ohne dass etwas passierte, und nichts mehr ging verloren. Was für ein Rätsel! ... weiter
Matthew and the Mystery of the Missing Playthings

English Translation
It was early Monday morning. Matthew was outside in the yard and he was really perplexed. Just five minutes ago, he had had a shiny new silver toy car right here in his hand. But where was it now?
He searched next to the fence, behind the house, and over by the goldfish pond. He ran inside and searched through his bedroom. His car had disappeared!
Matthew asked Daddy and Mommy if they might have seen it. They both shook their head and said, "No." He felt as if he wanted to cry, but he choked back the tears and found something else that he could play with.
Later in the morning, Matthew noticed that yet another toy was missing - a green toy truck that he really liked. He was certain that he had laid it down next to the kitchen door. Man! What was happening? Now two things were gone! He searched again with the same result. Nothing!
Mommy and Daddy helped him. They searched everywhere - even by the hedge, in the woodshed, and in the hot tub. They couldn't find anything, either. Now they were all perplexed!
"Oh well", said Mommy, "be very careful for the rest of the day. Maybe your things will turn up again later."
But that didn't happen.
Matthew finally had to go to bed - without his favorite toys!
The next day (that was Tuesday), the very same thing happened! First, it was a new red ball, then a colorful little Diego action figure, and finally a yellow stuffed lion. Three more things had gone missing. Now Matthew had lost five of his favorite things.
"No, no, no!" he exclaimed. "It just isn't fair!"
Mommy and Daddy didn't know what to do. They comforted Matthew and decided to watch him while he played. They took turns. The day passed without incident and nothing more went missing. What a mystery! ... continue
