What is the Easiest Method of Learning How to Speak French?
Although French is not among the more difficult languages to learn, it is necessary to spend some considerable time and effort if one wishes to master the subject and speak the language with some degree of proficiency.

By Stephen Day

If you wish to learn how to speak French, your first task is to decide which is the best possible method. Most likely, you will want to learn how to speak French as quickly as possible. With any foreign language, there are quite a few concepts that must be mastered.

Although French is not among the more difficult languages to learn, it is necessary to spend some considerable time and effort if one wishes to master the subject and speak the language with some degree of proficiency. Picking up a reasonable range of vocabulary is only one aspect. Correct use of grammar, tenses, and verb usage must also be understood in order to know how to speak French accurately and convincingly.

Please don't let the above put you off! It's perfectly possible to learn how to speak French in a reasonably short period. One effective method is what is known as a French immersion course. This means traveling to France and spending some time there on a residential course. This course is held for small groups of students, or one-to-one tuition is also available in some cases.

These courses are very intensive, and can typically last a week or more and can involve at least 30 hours and some cases in excess of 50 hours' work a week. What you actually do depends on the course, but it is likely to consist of several French lessons per day, time for study, and time for actual French conversation. The tutors are of course native French speakers.

These courses are quite rigorous and demanding. One course I've looked at promises 70 hours of immersion at a rate of 14 hours a day; another is a more modest 8 1/2 hours a day, although courses at this establishment are for between 2 and 4 weeks. It's certainly a quick way of learning to speak French, although very demanding and quite expensive. Fees generally range from about 2000 Euros (£1425, $2970) to in excess of 4000 Euros (£2850, $5940).

From this, it can be seen that such courses are not suitable for all people who may wish to learn how to speak French. The negative aspects of this method are the high cost, the need for long periods of intense concentration, and the requirement to travel to and spend time in France.

The best alternative to an immersion course is to study at home using a modern multimedia course.

These courses cost a fraction of the cost of an immersion course, and enable the student to learn French effectively, and at their own pace. Some of these courses consist of CDs or DVDs, books, and worksheets, etc. for home delivery. Alternatively, they are available for downloading from the Internet. The downloaded versions are considerably less expensive and in no way inferior to the other versions.

These multimedia courses consist of all the tools one requires in order to learn how to speak French. They include video with native French speakers teaching, and the facility to practice your own pronunciation. These multimedia courses also incorporate electronic books, work sheets, methods of monitoring one's progress, and in some cases, various other items such as games to stimulate one's learning of various aspects of French such as grammar, verb usage, etc.

In conclusion, although an immersion course is a highly effective way of learning to speak French, it isn't suitable for the majority of people. The need to travel to France, commitment of at least a week of time, the high level of extended mental concentration required, and the very high expense make this a difficult proposition for many people.

The best way of learning how to speak French for most people is a high quality modern multimedia course. These multimedia courses are inexpensive, easy to use, make the learning process as easy as possible, and enable learning as and when time is available.
