Three Effective Techniques to Learn a Foreign Language
|
By Dimitar Nikolov How would you feel if you fluently spoke five languages? Surely, it would boost both your confidence and abilities. Let me point to myself as an example: I am Bulgarian but I also speak English, German, French, and Russian, which immensely helps me in my job as an Internet marketing consultant. As curious as it sounds, I have never made nightlong efforts to learn those languages, yet I have certificates proving my communication skills in all of them. There are no secrets when trying to learn a foreign language. Some really effective tips, however, can help you master any language you want. Best practice: Go to where it is spoken. When I first went to Paris, I had been studying French for two years on a daily basis. Little had I known that what the textbooks had to offer was not particularly close to real French. That is how I realized that the only truly effective way to master a language is to visit its native country. The language barrier can be quite tough the first three days when you are not used to understanding and using French in real life situations. On the fifth day, I was very motivated to keep on speaking French and keep conversations going for as long as possible. However, life does not offer many trips to foreign countries, especially during a credit crunch, does it? Group lessons are the key. I have taken both private and group lessons. From my experience, I can say that group lessons are more helpful because dialogs and situations from real life can be simulated with as many people as the group offers. As well as that, you have a pace and level to keep and you can always compare your progress with that of others, thus letting you know when you have to put more efforts into studying. Web 2.0 helps you learn. Before blogs and social media, the only way to hear or read a foreign language was from online news sites and TV channels. Today, the web offers us many foreign blogs, Facebook, and Twitter accounts that contain valuable, up-to-date language. It is tough to read with understanding from the beginning, but as long as you have the will and time to keep on studying, you will succeed.
