Sophie Scholl DVD and Script Good Tools for Learning German
|
(c) Copyright Kathy Steinemann Anytime you find a good German movie on DVD as well as an accompanying script, you increase the opportunity for rapid learning. This article is based on the Region 1 edition of 'Sophie Scholl - The Final Days'. However, the film is also available for Regions 2 and 3. You can watch the movie once or twice without subtitles, then follow along while you read the script. Finish up once or twice with English subtitles enabled. Then study unfamiliar vocabulary. You will be amazed at how many new words you will understand by the time you complete the process. The movie has received the following nominations and awards: • Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film • European Film Awards - Best Actress (Julia Jentsch - Sophie) • German Film Awards (LOLAS) - Best Actress (Julia Jentsch - Sophie) • German Film Awards (LOLAS) - Audience Award This movie is better than many from a learning perspective. It includes a high percentage of clearly enunciated speech at an understandable speed. The plot is based on the true story of a German heroine who, along with her brother Hans, belonged to a non-violent resistance group called the 'White Rose' (Weiße Rose). The White Rose created, duplicated, and distributed pamphlets that enlightened German citizens about the truth behind Hitler and the Third Reich. From a viewer's perspective, the film appears to portray Sophie as someone who became involved with the White Rose during the last few weeks of her life. Side two of the DVD presents an interview with her sister, Elisabeth, who tells a different story. Elisabeth speaks of a Sophie who cared very much about what was happening to Germany and who was enthusiastically involved in the early days of the White Rose movement. In fact, the historical interviews are something you should not miss. Interviewees include the son of Sophie's Gestapo interrogator, the nephew of her cellmate, and a member of the White Rose. There is also a short black and white film clip of actual trial footage. The movie's end is chilling - perhaps even inspiring. Other extras include alternate/deleted scenes and a 'Making of' segment, divided into several sections. The book (Buch zum Film) can be purchased separately. It is completely in German - so keep your German-English dictionary on hand. In addition to the script (Drehbuch) for the movie, the book contains photographs, numerous previously unpublished historical documents, a short story about the White Rose, biographies of the members, and other information.
