Whether you are a teacher of foreign languages - or a language student - you can benefit by being able to watch foreign language DVDs. Unfortunately, DVD region protection makes this problematic. Luckily, there are many budget DVD units that can be switched to multi-region (or 'regionless') with some simple remote control commands.

Most modern DVD productions are manufactured to play in a specific region. Current commercial DVD regions have been assigned numbers 1 through 6. Check your DVD box for a picture that looks like a computer key or button with a globe in the background and a large number in the center (or the box may actually state the region instead).

If you live in Canada or the United States, your DVD player will play Region 1 DVDs. However, if you are learning German, and have purchased titles produced in Europe, they will only be playable on Region 2 machines. This makes it impossible to use them in your current DVD unit.

Luckily, there are several players well under $50 that can be modified to do the job.

Diamond Vision DVDV807-03 - Diamond Vision DVDV807-04

I purchased my player from Wal-Mart. It was around $30 Canadian at the time. My model is a DVDV 807-03, but the manual also covers the DVDV 807-04, so the information in this article should apply to it as well.

The only annoyances are:

  • The mechanical spin mechanism is a bit louder than I would like

  • If you try to perform some functions too quickly, the player will lock up. Powering down and turning it back on solves the problem.

It is a compact unit with a 9- by 10-inch footprint. The remote control fits nicely in the hand, and is a little larger (therefore easier to operate) than some remotes I have seen with other discount players. It is front-loading, which makes it a little easier to fit into a home entertainment unit.

It produces several types of video and audio signals:

  • RCA
  • Y/Pb, Cb/Pr, Cr
  • S-Video

    Region-Free Hack

  • Power up and wait until the 'No Disc' message appears onscreen.

  • Open the DVD compartment by pressing OPEN/CLOSE on the player.

  • Grab the remote control and press SETUP. You will now see the player's setup menu.

  • Carefully enter the following numeric sequence: 1 3 8 9

  • Now you will see another menu, and your cursor should be inside the box signifying the region code. Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to change the number. Region 0 (regionless) is probably the best one to select. So far I haven't found a DVD that won't play with this setting. However if you have problems, try choosing a specific region number.

  • To exit, press ENTER and SETUP once again.

  • This code sequence only has to be entered once. The DVD player does not lose the region setting when you turn off the power.

  • You don't have to do anything extra to ensure that the player will work properly with PAL or NTSC formats. It does an excellent job of sensing and displaying the correct output.

  • The users at videohelp.com report that this hack also works on many other Diamond Vision DVD units.

For the price, this DVD player can't be beat! It also makes a nice gift for a friend or relative who enjoys watching foreign titles.
