Region-Free Hack and Review: Philips DVP642 DVD Player

   By Kathy Steinemann

Learning a foreign language is so much easier if you can purchase DVDs in your language of choice and play them on your DVD player. However, modern technology makes that impossible if you don't own a unit that can play DVDs from other regions.

Learning a foreign language is so much easier if you can purchase DVDs in your language of choice and play them on your DVD player. However, modern technology makes that impossible if you don't own a unit that can play (or be altered to cope with) foreign regions.

The Phillips DVP-642 player has been reported 'region-free' by many users right out of the box. The unit I purchased at Wal Mart in January of 2007 wasn't initially regionless. However, a few clicks on the remote control quickly fixed that.

Region-Free Hack:

  • First, hook up the unit.

  • Turn on the power by pressing the STANDBY-ON button on the front left-hand side of the DVD player.

  • Make sure that it works with your default region DVDs before entering the hack codes.

  • Now remove any DVD that you have in the tray and power the unit off.

  • Wait a few seconds and turn it back on.

  • Wait until the NO DISC message appears on your TV screen.

  • Press OPEN/CLOSE to open the DVD tray.

  • Press the following buttons on the remote control: 7 ... 8 ... 9 ... OK ... 0

  • You will see information on the TV screen showing the initial region and the new region.

  • Wait a few seconds, and the screen will return to normal.

The '0' in the sequence above refers to the region number; '0' makes your DVD player region-free. You may also select a specific region from 1 to 6 - but the zero setting should work for just about everything.

Now you should be able to play DVD titles from other regions!

    More Information:

For the purposes of this review, I did not check the other capabilities of the player. However, the box provides the following information:

    Superb audio and video performance:

  • Progressive scan
  • 4 x video upsampling (54MHz)
  • 192 KHz/24 bit audio DAC

    Plays practically any disc format:

  • MPEG4, DivX 3.11/4.x, 5.x. 6.x, DVD+R/+RW
  • VCD, SVCD, Picture CD, MP3-CD, CD-R/-RW

The unit is an attractive silver-grey machine measuring a sleek 17 inches wide by 10 inches deep and 1 3/4 inches high.

The package contains a user manual, quick start guide, video cable, audio cables, remote control, and 2 AA batteries.

The picture it produces is good, as is the audio, and the physical spin mechanism is very quiet. The Philips will automatically sense NTSC/PAL signals to provide the proper display for your television.

The purchase price was just under $60 Canadian at the local Wal-Mart store. This Philips DVD player is also sold by other outlets - but Wal-Mart has a good history of offering low prices with in-store exchanges for defective merchandise.

Philips has a website where you can download free software upgrades for future DVD technology enhancements. The USA site is located at www.philips.com/usasupport. There is also more information on this player at videohelp.com.

Now ... go to ebay, Amazon, or another favorite source of DVDs, and buy what you want - confident that everything will be playable on your machine.
