Region-Free Hack: Philips DVP3960 and DVP3980 DVD Players

   By Kathy Steinemann

Most DVDs are only playable in specific regions. You need a region-free or region-changeable DVD player to watch many foreign-language films. Luckily, you can reprogram both the Philips DVP3960 and DVP3980 DVD players within seconds. Here is how.

Listening to a foreign language is the best way to learn. In fact, some researchers claim you shouldn't break out the grammar books until you have at least several months of audio exposure. That's easier said than done, with DVDs manufactured to perform only in specific regions.

You need a region-free or region-changeable DVD player to watch many foreign-language productions. Luckily, you can reprogram both the Philips DVP3960 and DVP3980 DVD players within seconds. These sleek-looking compact units can be purchased at outlets like Wal-Mart for around $50.

With a few clicks on your remote control, the DVD players can be set to any region you wish (or region 0 to play almost all DVDs from most regions). Some DVDs may not work with a region 0 setting, in which case you will have to use the specific region code needed. So far, after playing hundreds of DVDs, I have not found any that were not playable.

How to Change the Region Code

• 1. Open the DVD tray. - The splash screen displays.

• 2. Press 'Setup' on the remote control. - A menu pops onto the screen.

• 3. Scroll to 'Preference Page' using the left and right arrow keys to move along the top of the screen.

• 4. Enter the following number sequence: 1 3 8 9 3 1. - A menu will appear with the current region code displayed in the center of the screen.

• 5. Use the 'up' and 'down' arrow keys to select 0 for a region-free player or select a specific region from the Basic List of DVD Region Codes below.

• 6. Press 'OK'.

• 7. Press 'Setup'.

• 8. Put a DVD into the player, and watch at will!

Disclaimer

Although entering numbers via a remote control is unlikely to void your warranty, the same sequence may not work on similar units manufactured on different dates. Use at your own risk. Remember that if you buy hacked chips or install non-manufacturer firmware, your warranty will be invalidated.
