Region-Free Hack: DAENYX DV-3111S and DV-3111B DVD Players

Learning a foreign language is so much easier if you can listen to it on a daily basis. What better way to accomplish this than to watch DVD productions in your target language! Unfortunately, most modern DVDs are manufactured to work in specific regions. Simplified List of Region Codes • 1 - US, US territories, Canada • 2 - UK, Europe, Japan, South Africa, Middle East • 3 - Southeast and East Asia • 4 - Australia, New Zealand, Central and South America • 5 - Former Soviet Union, Indian sub-continent, Africa, North Korea, Mongolia • 6 - China You might think that an expensive DVD player, firmware upgrades, or special electronic hardware is necessary to enjoy foreign language DVDs from other regions. Not so! Wal-Mart and other retailers sell inexpensive units like the DAENYX line that you can easily change with a few clicks of your remote control. This article covers the DAENYX DV-3111S and DV-3111B (also described elsewhere on the Internet as DAENYX DV3111s and DV3111b). Users report that the key sequence works for the DAENYX DV-2001 (or DV2001) as well. The unit I purchased at Wal-Mart was $34.95 CAD. It was up and running within minutes, playing a new German-language Region 2 DVD. How to Change the Region Code • 1. Open the DVD tray. - The DAENYX initial splash screen displays. • 2. Press SETUP on the remote control. - The 'Language Setup' screen displays. • 3. Carefully enter the numbers 9 7 3 5 (Disregard any error messages.) A number will show on the top right hand side of the screen. It should be the default region code for wherever you purchased the DVD player. • 4. Use the left and right arrows to choose a different number (see 'Simplified List of Region Codes' near the beginning of this article). You may select the number '255' to make your DVD player region-free. However, it may not work with all DVDs. • 5. Press SETUP once again. The number on the top right hand side of the screen will disappear. • 6. Put in your foreign-language DVD and watch at your leisure! The first time around, the DVD player may grind and clunk a bit as it initializes its new programming. It will take longer than usual to load your first DVD. After that, the new settings will be transparent, and you should be able to play compatible DVDs from various regions without hearing a repeat performance of the disagreeable noise. Disclaimer Although entering numbers via a remote control is unlikely to void your warranty, the same sequence may not work on similar units manufactured on different dates. Use at your own risk. Remember that if you buy hacked chips or install non-manufacturer firmware, your warranty will be invalidated.
