Portable DVD Player Review and Region-Free Hack

Wal-Mart has done it again. They offer an inexpensive portable DVD player that can be made regionless with a few simple clicks of the remote control. This article explains how to do it. Durabrand PDV-705: This compact little player with a 7-inch screen will play DVDs, audio CDs, CD-R/RW disks, MP3 CDs, and picture CDs. Video formats: Included in the box are: Unfortunately, the Durabrand PDV705 does not include earphones. However, for a unit under $100, you don't expect too many bells and whistles. The battery actually appears to be of a higher quality than batteries sold with more expensive units. Many players rely heavily on the remote control, with no access to features like brightness and color unless you go into a setup menu. This nifty little DVD unit has the controls right on the unit itself. If you misplace or lose your remote control, you can still watch your favorite movies. Unit buttons include: The sound quality of the built-in speakers is definitely very 'tinny'. However, using headphones or earbuds produces a good stereo listening experience. This player also has S-video and coaxial jacks (cables not included). The 'programmed play' function allows you to create a program of up to 16 tracks for CDs and MP3s. MP3 files do not have to be crammed into the root directory of the CD. You can actually organize them into separate directories/folders. Now here is the good part! Making it Region-Free: Now you will have a DVD player that is capable of playing DVDs from all regions. Other Inexpensive Regular DVD Players That Can Be Made Region-Free Diamond DVD807-03: The code-free sequence for this Diamond DVD player also works on many of their other units. Regent DVD-1000: Unfortunately, the Regent DVD1000 must have the following codes entered via remote control every time you turn it on. Disclaimer: Enter codes at your own risk! Many users, as well as the author, have successfully changed their region codes to 0 after inputting the above sequences.
