Learn and Speak a New Language without Taking a Single Class
If you only speak English and find yourself in a country where English is not the first language or in some cases not spoken at all, it is very difficult to find your way around. However, do not despair! You can learn another language quite quickly.

Although English is spoken by a vast number of people worldwide, it is still not the number one spoken language in the world. Therefore, it is safe to say that for those of us who only speak English and find ourselves in a country where English is not the first language or in some cases not spoken at all, it is very difficult to find our way around. However, do not despair; it is possible to learn a new language without even attending a single class. Believe me, it can be done.

For someone like myself who did not know Portuguese before traveling to Brazil initially, familiarizing myself with a few basic phrases on the ten-hour flight to Brazil made it easier for me to order food and ask for simple directions. However, that was Sao Paulo where some English is spoken, but it was not the end of my travels.

There was another challenge up ahead. I still had to travel to Salvador, Bahia, where little or no English was spoken and my friend's family did not know English at all. Therefore, in one weekend, I had to learn Portuguese or else no one would have been able to communicate.

When I returned to the States, I decided to learn Portuguese. My company paid for language courses, but I did not have the time to dedicate to a class. However, seeing that I had a strong desire to learn Portuguese, I devised another approach. There is no time limit for you to learn. You can learn at your own pace.

Here are a few tips, that with some dedication and perseverance, will have you speaking a new language fluently in no time at all:

Tips:

• Purchase a dictionary that is an "English-desired language" dictionary - for example, an English-Portuguese dictionary.

• Learn a new language the way you learned your native tongue, one word at a time.

• Purchase and upload language CD's into your iPod.

• Subscribe online to newspapers in the desired language.

• Sign up to receive emails in the desired language.

• Go to the website of the country(s) that speak that language and practice reading.

• Practice writing in the language.

• Practice speaking in the language.

• It doesn't matter if your speech is broken.

• New York City is the melting pot of most of the world's cultures.

• Go where there are native speakers of the language.

• Dine at ethnic restaurants and practice ordering food in the new language.

Benefits:

• Once you have a learned a new language, you will be amazed at how much easier it is to understand a third language. Very soon you could be speaking or at least have an understanding of every major language that exists.

• Your social circle will expand. You will have the opportunity to meet far more people than you would have thought possible. No need to spend Saturday nights alone.

• There will be increased career opportunities.

• Who knows, you might meet your potential mate.

• When you are able to read in another language without having to stop and translate every other word, then you have mastered it. In addition, when you start having dreams in the second language, you are now bilingual.

• ENJOY!
