Finding time-efficient ways to learn new German vocabulary presents a challenge. Enter 'Kurz und bündig' - short stories compiled by Diogenes Verlag AG Zürich. This article explains how to use these short stories to increase your vocabulary. Are you too busy to sit down and read a good book? Are you looking for an easy way to expand your German vocabulary? Enter 'Kurz und bündig' - a collection of short stories compiled by Diogenes Verlag AG Zürich. The pocketbook contains 100 short stories ranging in size from 1-sentence pieces to a story that takes up a whopping 4 1/2 pages. You will find famous authors from various countries and backgrounds: Mark Twain, Franz Kafka, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Hans Christian Andersen, Patrick Süskind, and many others. Several of the stories are funny, others are thought provoking, some even disturbing. Anton Cechov explains in one line how a hostess quickly gets rid of her guests. Kurt Tucholsky describes how somebody uses a flea to trap a postal employee who likes to snoop in everyone's mail. You will meet cats, dogs, flies, bulls, and brides. You will read about socks, revolutions, and murders. The CD audio book contains 65 stories, 45 of which you will also find in the book. Three of the 45 have slightly different translations. How can this help you to increase your German vocabulary? You can study and learn the vocabulary for the 45 stories in the audio book, starting with the shortest and working up to the longest. You will be able to listen to readings by native German speakers, Anna König and Hans Korte. The narrators have slightly different accents, which is actually a good way for you to train your ear. German is like any other language, with varying accents depending on region or country. Once you have mastered these, progress to the other 55 stories in the pocketbook, and finish up with the remaining 20 on the CDs. This helps you to progress from the easiest tasks: short stories with accompanying audio - to more difficult: short stories with text but no audio - to the most difficult: listening to audio and understanding it without text or subtitles. Stories that Appear in Both the Book and the CD There are two lists below. The first itemizes stories in order of size, and the second in order of appearance on the CDs. The three stories that have slightly different translations are indicated by brackets () surrounding the page numbers. Long titles have been abbreviated. For example: CD1-35-(Pg198)-Ende indicates that the story 'Ende' appears on CD 1, track 35, and corresponds with the same story on page 198 of the book. The brackets specify that this story is a slightly different translation.
