Importance of Learning Other Languages as the World Shrinks
|
By Jay Peavler Learning a foreign language is becoming more important all the time. Our world continues to get smaller and smaller every day. People are traveling to all parts of the world for pleasure and for work. It is not unusual to walk through the local mall and find exotic clothing on the customers or to hear many different foreign languages being used. There are many incidences that would make speaking more than one language an excellent idea. For example, what if you find yourself in a situation where a person of another culture was injured or involved in an accident? What would you do if you could not communicate with them? Obviously, knowing their language would make that scenario much easier. The way the world is today, with borders opening to foreigners that were closed for so long, you never know what part of the world your new next-door neighbor might come from. Being able to speak to them in their language would make getting to know them easier, and would ease the stress for them of living in unfamiliar surroundings. You also never know when your company might send you to a foreign country for work. Companies have moved more and more of their operations overseas these days. How much easier it would be to be able to speak the language of the natives while learning how to navigate around a new city. Even simple phrases like "where is the market?" would make your life less stressful in that situation. People in your new environment would appreciate your willingness to understand them in their language. The best place to start is to choose a language that you hear being spoken around you where you live. If there are many people in your area who came from Mexico, for example, it would be a good idea to start your journey of being bilingual by learning Spanish. That way you could get a lot of practice attempting to speak to the people you come in contact with every day. The way to become fluent in a language is to speak it all the time, putting yourself in a place where you would be immersed in it daily. From there "the sky's the limit!" The next language you learn will be easier than the last, and so forth. You can learn to speak many languages. All it takes is the decision to start. There are many programs out there to make it possible. Just set aside time every day to work on your goal. Before you know it, you will be speaking to the people around you in their tongue and learning many fascinating things about a culture that you wouldn't have known had you continued to be separated by the "language barrier."
