By Richard Pringle The easiest times in one's life to learn a new language are during childhood or adolescence. This is when everything is fresh and new, and the groundwork for learning is established. However, that does not mean you cannot take on a new language if you are older than say, 30 or 40 years of age. In order to avoid becoming frustrated and giving up on the acquisition of a new language, always focus on the process of learning and do not compare your progress to that of other people. We all learn in our own way and at our own pace, as learning is a very individual and often mysterious state. Put time and energy into the language you are learning, but realize that you will have good days and bad days. They are all a part of the learning process. Resist the urge to constantly ask yourself, 'how you are doing?' and instead ask yourself what you can do to engage the language more completely. Be realistic and understand that learning a language will not be something you can accomplish overnight. It will take some time to learn the language and even longer to perfect it and become aware of all the nuances of the language. With this in mind, do not be deterred and do not let yourself get discouraged. If you must plod along some days, then do so - but celebrate the fact that you are taking on this challenge at all. Study often and as intensely as possible. Make sure you have all of your study materials on hand and find a quiet, well-lit area where you can do your work.
