How to Assess Your Natural Foreign Language Predisposition
|
By Gennady Alipatov A person's memorization of information is highly dependent on the ability to involve his (or her) nervous system. The more parts of the nervous system that are involved, the better each person memorizes the information. This is a well-known fact! From this fact, you can easily conclude that for effective memorization, you need to use some method that can make a lasting impact upon you. Suppose you are going to learn a foreign language. What is the top method that can influence you and help you memorize foreign words? First, let's look at how children memorize words. Children memorize their mother tongue as a part of the stream of general information about the surrounding world. A child's nervous system is always in the mood for something new and interesting. A child doesn't learn the language in the same way as an adult does. Verbal speech is inseparable from other information that stimulates the senses of a child (eyesight, touch, smell, and taste). Having found a new beetle, a child cannot differentiate the verbal description from the insect and the surrounding situation. A child perceives this situation as a general stream of information. As people get older, their natural inclinations to be amazed and their abilities for memorization decline with time. The more experienced people become, the less and less new verbal information they tend to encounter. Finally, adults lose their natural ability to involve their nervous system for language memorization. Adults, as more experienced people, try to learn a foreign language. They can't perceive and memorize a language as children do. Returning to the above question, I can say that the best method for word memorization is singing. A song involves more parts of the human nervous system than any other method of memorization. However, can a song guarantee the memorization of foreign words and locutions? Why is it that some people cannot memorize foreign words even via songs? The problems may be individual and different. Let's talk about one of them, which does not depend upon personal ability (or disability) to learn a foreign language. For this purpose, let me say a few words about a song. A song is a valuable part of oral tradition. The songs of oral tradition have outlived generations of people and remained unchanged! The songs can combine a national language, national psychology, and national history. That is why a song can be an excellent specimen of a language, culture, and music at the same time. If you don't like the culture of a nation, or you feel indifferent about most of the songs in the language that you are going to learn, then it would be better to abandon your efforts! This is an obvious indication of the difficulties that you could encounter learning this particular language. So, what do we need for successful memorization? You have very good chances, if you are fond of the culture of the nation whose language you are going to learn. You must prepare yourself for interesting and hard work that must be done on daily basis. For deep understanding of a foreign song, you need to be ready to empathize with the plot of a song and lyrics' imageries. However, how can you come to experience this state? This problem is rather difficult, but it is very interesting! I can say for sure that you can overcome this problem! From the very moment you begin to understand and perceive foreign songs, you begin to think in this language! However, to attain this success, you simply need to have good personal incentives from the very beginning. What method can help in 'converting' your personal incentives into successful learning of a foreign language? If, for example, you are going to learn Russian, the indispensable method for you could be the Linguistic Teaching Decomposition method and Via Songs to Russian software, which can really bring people to success in learning Russian!
